I know I’m not alone in this but I don’t like having my photo taken and like many of you, I’m much more comfortable being the person behind the camera which is where you can usually find me.
I love taking photos and I always have a camera within my reach, whether it’s my phone camera or one of my three cameras (they’re all good for different things so I NEED them all – honestly). I have literally thousands of photos and the kids are so used to me taking photos of them that they know just to get on with what they’re doing and let me click away.
I’ve been a bit obsessed with recording memories since the kids were born and one of the best things we ever bought was a camcorder (now obsolete seeing as I use my phone for any videos) and we have lots of DVDs filled with moments from when the kids were tiny, again with me behind the camera.
They’re great to look back on and the kids love watching them with us and hearing about the funny things they did when they were little. I find it funny to see that my memories of how smooth things went when I had two children in nappies is in now way the same as the reality that you see on the videos! Seriously, bulging nappies, porridge on the floor, toys everywhere – nothing like what I remember in my head of perfect parenting in the early years 😉
Anyway, the other night Master Frugal was watching some of the DVDs, he turned to me and asked me why I wasn’t in many of the videos. He said it would have been lovely to have seen more of me so he could look back on it when he was grown up.
That made me really sad because as I’ve said before, one of my most treasured possessions is a video I have of my sixth birthday party which has my Mam, Brother and Nana in it. Listening to it with my eyes shut means that I can almost feel them in the room with me.
I want my children to look back on their childhood and see photos of me with them enjoying all the things we’ve done so I have an early New Years Resolution – to make sure that every now and again, I’m on the other side of the camera.
Here’s my first few:
Just in case you’re wondering, the SuperMario hats were a gift from the lovely people at Nintendo which they sent us along with Super Mario 3D World which is so much fun and gave us a great evening of family fun last night!
