A couple of years ago we were invited along to one of the WWE Live events at Newcastle Metro Arena and although I was most definitely not a fan of wrestling, Master Frugal was so obviously I couldn’t say no.
On the night of the event, we headed to the Arena with me feeling more than a little smug about how good a parent I was being- sacrificing an evening of binge watching whatever the latest thing was on Netflix to take my boy to see some of the big name stars he loved watching on TV.
What happened next was as big a shock to me as it was to everyone else who knows me – I absolutely loved it! I loved the atmosphere, the big intros, the personalities and yes, I even loved the actual wrestling.
I was cheering and chanting along with the rest of the crowd and with Master Frugal’s help, I understood who was a ‘good guy’ and who was a ‘bad guy’. I was filled in on which matches were grudge matches and told at the start of the match who to cheer for and by the end of the night, I was genuinely sorry it was over.
We were lucky enough to be invited back again the next time WWE Live came to Newcastle and again, despite not watching any wrestling since that first event we went to, I had a great time.
The next time we went back was Master Frugal’s Birthday weekend so the team at WWE Live arranged for him to meet one of his heroes – Stardust. Miss Frugal also made friends with the cast of Geordie Shore that night too and spent the whole night taking selfies with them in the background.
This time around the event was on a Sunday so we made plans to make a lovely afternoon of it by stopping at the Metrocentre for some shopping and lunch before we headed into Newcastle and we were all looking forward to what we were going to see. But then we woke up on Sunday morning and I felt awful. I’d known I would have to dose up on painkillers to make it through the day but we always had such good fun that I was willing to do that so the kids didn’t miss out.
(For those of you who don’t know, I’m recovering from an operation and the moment and the healing is very slooooow)
Unfortunately there was no way I was going anywhere but back to bed so the Metrocentre part of the day was cancelled and Mr Frugal ended up taking the kids to the wrestling himself. I was gutted to miss out but at least the kids didn’t have to.
It looks like I missed an amazing night but at least I’ll be back on my feet ready for when they come back again next year!
